In A Word
by Dot

The wall is lined with row upon row of books
Not all pristine in plastic covers or
Crisp white edged pages
These books are lovingly worn, by caressing hands,
and grabbing hands, and splashes of coffee
or tea with milk
with grease stains from scones or muffins or roast beef
These are not the "look at books" that some people have
These are the touch me, love me, read me books
in our home
Every room contains them,
some rooms have a hundred or more.
Science and theater and literary fiction galore,
mysteries, classics, some ancient pages crumbling to dust
and still
We read them, lend them
bathe with them, and eat with them.
Words our constant companions.
Stories and characters our friends.

I Hope
by Deb

i know it may seem
out of fashion
certainly not
green tech
but i hope we never lose
words written on paper
printed on paper
bound with board and cloth
signatures stitched
a book
for holding and touching
a book with a smell
and texture
illustrations floating
and flooding me with memory

how many words
drawn, pulled, yanked
from writers hand
so many words
lovingly fought over
and thought over
words and words and words
for the choosing
and collected for
our pure pleasure
our sharing
our learning

so again
i hope
we can find peace
on pages of paper
or computer screen
meeting all of our needs

i hope you can see
i'm not asking you
to give up your
electronic reading machine
just please
don't ask me to give
up mine
a worn and well loved book
