napowrimo: april 4

What piece of junk are you keeping? Open the 'junk' drawer in your life...it's probably in your kitchen, your garage or your desk. Take one item out of it that's been there for a long time. Write a piece that explains why you haven't thrown the item away yet.

These were in response to a different prompt from the writing workshop: three haikus of dreams, written quickly...

sun shining snow falls
wandering the streets of taos
natalie watching

the bell rang I ran
slid down the hall remembered
everyone went home

a new step-parent
nightmare of kids attacking
awake sweating tears

posted for Jenny ... also from the writing workshop prompt...

I cry hold me, love

Telescopic fingers touch

Wake up to distance

Small, fragile birds smile

White flowers float in stone pond

Pebbles crush – Escape!

Can control flying

I go where I want - good wings

Abyss can’t kill me!

untitled and untidy
by Deb

opened the drawer to this old desk
found for free, ugly but useful
our computer station for years

inside, nothing but 'junk'
handfuls of old pencils
broken lead
but no sharpener
crayons well past pretty
pens from my work
our crisis number
displayed for safety

three staplers
two red plastic geometry templates
six half jars of glitter
luster long lost

my children's immunization records
the horrid proof picture
from my first graduation

these are worthless things
to be sure
and yet, as i touched each
i felt the impressions
my children's fingerprints
much smaller hands then
little trace
of the young men they are becoming

how could i ever discard
these treasures left to me
