Under the Surface
by Dot

The sun shines down unrelenting
baking the surface now hard
and cracked
a soft white powder scatters in the wind
remains of skin now ash now gone

while under ground the click
of bones whitened not by the sun
but dirt washing over in the floods
down the arroyo
the canyon
down there

the escaping vapors as
microscopic insects
steal the now hardened marrow
nip and crunch
the underground home
no eternal rest

for the hungry

April Showers
by Deb

Sometimes the rain
is friendly
it invites warm
inside pleasures
a fire
a candle
bake a loaf of bread
scoup up homemade soup

Other rains
have harsh edges
it falls and cuts
into lives
who can least afford
one more pain
one more wet shoe
turning toes
to danger zones

I saw her
standing dazed
a bright green scarf
laid across her head
dragging on the ground
offering no shelter
while coffee poured
freely
around the corner
another country from hers
and she without a passport
